Happy Birthday, Uma!

Our dear, darling mimingcat Uma is one year old today.

*wipes tear*

When my brother rescued her one rainy morning from the trash, her eyes were still closed and her umbilical cord was still attached. We didn’t know if she’d survive, she went a couple of days without a name so we wouldn’t get too attached. She was so thin and frail back then:

She has grown into this crazy, chubby beauty:

one of her favorite hobbies is to watch over Maisky the hamster

And what’s a first birthday party without party hats? My sister May made hats for all the pets.

I was supposed to bake her a cake but I was too tired today, we put her birthday candles on monggo bread instead:

For dinner, we had my parents’ wicked paella, which they slaved all day to make, but that’s because today is also their 33rd wedding anniversary. Uma has good timing, no? There’s bound to be good food every year on her birthday.

I can’t say enough how smitten we all are with this cat. She has brought so much joy into our home. We all went to her for comfort when we went through a difficult period last year, even my dad especially my dad. We enjoyed having a cat so much that we adopted a second cat, and now it’s double the fun.

Before we had Uma, I absolutely hated cats. Couldn’t stand them. Now, I’m a cat-lover for life.

My little sleepyheads

It must be nice to be a little kitty cat…

You get to sleep all day…

sleep… sleep… sleep… sleep… sleep…

and no one will bother you because that’s what you’re supposed to do, if you’re not eating or playing.

Well, I try not to bother them when they’re sleeping, but sometimes I can’t help it. They’re so darn adorable that I can’t help but pick them up when they’re sleeping. Bad, I know. Sorry, kitties.

I guess it’s just fair. They bother me when I sleep, too: jumping on my tummy or running all over me or nibbling my toe or licking my forehead with their tongues that are as rough as abrasives. I guess we all deserve each other. :)

Meet Sophie

Coinciding with June being Adopt-A-Cat Month®, my brother Joe brought home our second rescued weird-looking cat. Like Uma, we’ll insist that she’s cute, hehe!

Joe found her on the PMA grounds when he was there last week for summer music camp. He brought her home all the way from Baguio.

I reckon she’s 6-7 weeks old. Joe named her Sophie because she looks so confusing, she’s like one big code.

Uma is a big sister now! The first few days were difficult, Uma hated the new kitten so much, she was practically murderous. She had quite an attitude problem when Sophie first arrived, it left me wondering if cats have PMS. They’re slowly warming up to each other now.

We’re giving them a little bit more time to get used to each other. I’m sure they’ll be BFFs soon!

Uma My Love

My, my… I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t been posting pictures of my beloved kitten on this blog… What a shame. *tsk*tsk*

I really should stop calling her a kitten. She’s a big girl now, she just turned 10 months. She’s even gone in heat twice now! Look at her, this pretty little lardball, asleep on the scanner:

Quite a fatty, is she not? You wouldn’t think she used to look like she overdosed on OxyElite Pro.

Oh, Uma, our precious bibicat! We can’t get enough of you!

I want to learn photography for my cat

I’ve said this before: I still don’t know how to use the DSLR properly after all these years. The camera, an Olympus E-500, was bought on impulse by my dad but he doesn’t really use it, so it’s at my disposal. I told myself that I’ll enroll in basic photography lessons before I have children so I can take good pictures of my offspring, but I might have to learn sooner because I found the perfect model.

I grabbed the camera when I saw her looking like this when I entered the room:

We then had a pictorial session, she was such a ham.

Pardon the fug sheets. Once I get married I’ll get pretty Sferra bedsheets.

Now lookie here, these are ANTM-worthy. What you say, Ms. J. Alexander?

And here’s my money shot:

Sorry, Kitty. Right now, these pics are the best I can do.

Christmas Cat

My kitten has a new pasttime: climbing the Christmas tree! Little kitty can make it to the top. I guess she’s gotten tired of ‘harvesting’ the Christmas balls (notice the bottom part of the tree, there aren’t any balls left). We don’t plug the lights in anymore.

Oh, Cat! Christmas is so much merrier with you around!

Although it’s been said many times, many ways:

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!!!

What to get the pets?

I forgot to worry about christmas gifts for babies. . . not human babies, but our pet babies here at home. They deserve a little something from me this Christmas for keeping me sane.

Uma actually already has her fair share of presents, she was actually the first one in our household to receive a Christmas gift, when the package sent by Meow by Kate (a.k.a. Nugget’s human) arrived last month. Uma received a kitten book and a cute cherry-blossom print collar.

Thanks, Kate!

And the other day, Momon and Ros bought her some toys. Because we’re low EQ, we gave the toys to the kitten right away, Christmas seems too far away.

Thanks, Momon and Ros!

I’m going to get Uma more toys, and get Cello some more chew toys. As for Apu, kangkong and carrots are enough to make him one happy rabbit.

I still do need to get presents for human babies: my godchildren and babies of my friends. I wish it were as easy to think of presents for real babies as it is for my pets.

Uma as a flower girl?

I’m sure you’ve all heard of pets being part of  the wedding entourage. It’s not as common here in the Philippines, but I’ve read many a story of couples enlisting their pet dog as ring bearer.

We’re not going to have children in our entourage, but wouldn’t my cat look adorable as a flower girl? I’ll make her wear a pretty satin ribbon round her neck and maybe flowers on her head. I’ll make our dogs join in the fun as well, I’ll have Cello and Django wear bow ties. They’ll make such a cute sight, they might just take the limelight away from me.

You’ll have to pardon me, dear reader. I think about our wedding at least forty-seven times a day, and every so often I get the craziest ideas.

Balding Uma

My kitten started to have a bald spot above each eye last week, and those just kept getting bigger each day. I feared that she might have some sort of kitty skin problem, heaven forbid that she’d have to undergo the feline equivalent of eczema treatments. Anyway, thanks to good old Mr. Google, I now know that this is normal, so I’ll stop freaking out now.

I just hope that the fur above her eyes grow back soon, she looks a bit weird. Nevertheless, I still think she’s the most adorable kitten on the face of the planet!

What will you get me, Secret Santa?

Will you be doing Secret Santa/monito-monita/kris kringle/exchange gift this year? Someone’s organizing one at the office and I’m joining in the fun. We’re doing just one gift instead of having little ‘something-somethings’ leading up to the big gift, which is just how I like it.

I don’t know if we’re having a wishlist, I’m hoping so. I wouldn’t want to get something I already have, like yet another Starbucks tumbler (but a Starbucks  Christmas mug? I want!) or something useless to me like a bottle of acne body wash.

I’m going to start thinking about that wishlist seriously now, all I want right now is P500 worth of Whiskas Junior for my kitten!

Meet Jepoi

Dad's Ultimate Buffet

Abet and I got him at Dad’s in SM Megamall yesterday. We ate so much at the Ultimate Buffet, I probably need some of the most effective diet pills 10K right now.

This is actually the first stuffed animal Abet and I own. I hate stuffed toys with a vengeance, and I once told my boyfriend that I’ll break up with him if he ever gives me a stuffed toy (or anything from Blue Magic).

We named him after Kuya Jepoi who was working the sushi bar at Saisaki.

Looks like someone dislikes stuffed toys as much as I do:

Dad's Buffet Megamall

Uma, you’re expensive!

I never realized that raising a kitten can get costly! Or maybe it’s just Uma?

When we first got her, my brother bought kitty baby formula for around P400 a can. She went through two cans before we switched her to real food. The first solid food Momon bought her was a big box of dry Whiskas Junior which she refused to eat, so it went to waste. Now she’s on wet Whiskas Junior, which costs P30 a pack. Initially, a  pack lasted her three days, then two days, until it was down to a pack a day. I don’t think I can afford any more than that. We supplement her diet with rice and whatever viand we have, but she doesn’t eat those with as much gusto as she does her Whiskas.

And then there’s the kitty litter. A five-kilo bag for P35o lasts half a month. Ouch. I’ll need to look for a cheaper brand in Cartimar.

We’ll be taking her next week to her first visit to the veterinarian, I hope kitty shots aren’t too expensive. We’ll also have her spayed once she hits the weight requirement, I need to prepare for that as well.

This is one pricey pet.

I just keep on reminding myself that the joy she’s brought into our home makes her worth every single centavo, and that she’s earned me a little bit of money in blog revenue. And that we got her for free in the first place.
