My mom’s spaghetti: almost there!

One of the things on my 31 Before 31 list is to master my mom’s spaghetti recipe. It is one of the best spaghetti recipes in the whole wide world. You can ask anyone who’s had the good fortune of tasting it.

Her sauce is really special. She uses two kinds of spaghetti sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, the leanest beef she could find, finely chopped hotdogs, quickmelt cheese, butter, beef cubes, cream, and condensed milk.

I attempted to make Mama’s spaghetti yesterday for Abet’s birthday. The day before, I had her explain to me step-by-step and in detail how she makes her sauce. It turned out really well. My in-laws, and most especially my husband, were impressed. I loved it, too. If only I wasn’t afraid of the side effects of oxyelite pro, I probably would have eaten the sauce like soup and just have taken a diet pill afterwards.

My spaghetti last night was good, but it wasn’t my mother’s spaghetti recipe. I’m getting there. I know I’ll be able to replicate it because my youngest brother Joe has done it. A few more tweaks–and a few more spaghetti dinners–and I’ll be able to cross this item off my list.

Someone almost upstaged me at my wedding…

…and believe it or not, she was wearing a P250 ukay-ukay dress. A P250 UKAY-UKAY DRESS!

Also, believe it or not, she turns 61 today. Sixty-one, my dear friends. These are all raw images (resized for my blog), no Photoshop.

Happy birthday to my beautiful mother, who is as beautiful within as she is on the outside.

You are the most inspiring woman I know, Ma. While I pray that I look half as good as you do when I’m 61, what I’m really praying for is that I be half as good as you are as a wife and as a mother. I love you!

Happy anniversary to my parents, who have the MOST AWESOME MARRIAGE EVER. They stuck it out especially in worse, in sickness, and in poorer. 33 years of marriage and they are still so in love, still go on dates, still hold hands in public, and still sleep intertwined you won’t know which limb belongs to whom. I am going into my own marriage praying that Abet and I will have what they have with each other.

FOTD: My mom’s graduation look

As with all of her events, I did my mom’s makeup for her students’ graduation last Friday.

Doing my mother’s makeup was actually what got me started in makeup artistry. Now that I’ve gone to makeup school, I think I’m doing a much better job of prettifying her.

Revlon Beyond Natural Smoothing Primer
Revlon Custom Creations foundation

Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer
ELF neutrals quad
Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner in black
Maybelline Volume Express Cat Eyes Mascara in black

MAC Brow Liner in Spiked
MAC Brow Set in Girl Boy

NARS Orgasm blush

MAC Brick-o-La lipstick

She looks good for her age, no? I can only hope to look that good when I’m 60.

Some of her students at Bilibid Prison (she and my dad teach college at Bilibid, they get paid P35 per hour) will be graduating this Friday, I can’t wait to do her makeup again.

My favorite ‘client’

I did my mama’s make-up yesterday for a wedding:

My mom with her still unopened bottle of Estee Lauder Green Tea that I got her in HK. Doesn’t my mom look cute? You wouldn’t think she’ll be 60 years old in a few weeks. Here’s her dress:

I can only hope to look that good when I’m her age!

Anyway, I always do my mom’s make-up for her events (like this one for her doctorate graduation). It looks washed out in the pictures, but I think her make-up looks good in real life, if I may say so myself.

I really do enjoy making people’s faces up, even if right now those faces are just my mother’s and my sister’s. And I do believe I have some skills with it, considering that I didn’t have any training (unless YouTube videos count) and I don’t have the right tools. I can do so much more if I had the training and the tools.

I finally — finally! — enrolled in make-up school and will start next week. This is something I have always wanted to do but I had too many excuses for not doing so, number one of which is that it’s expensive . Well, I’m throwing all my excuses out the door, even if it will eat all my savings up. Abet will help me with the expenses.

I want to make a career out of this. God knows I’m willing to work hard and learn as much as I can and to sacrifice. My friend Bunny who also went to the same make-up school has already given me clear picture of the harsh reality of trying to make it in this business. Bring it on.

The next three months will be very exciting, but very scary as well, but if there’s one thing I’m sure of, I know I’ll end up much better at putting on make-up than I am now.

And I can make my mom look even more gorgeous than she already does.

My Mama, The Working Girl

My mom is obviously enjoying being a college teacher!

I kinda miss her, I’m not used to not having her around when I wake up, but I’m glad to see that she’s happy with her job. She left her post at a bank around the time my sister May was born to be a stay-at-home mother, and now that she’s back in the workforce, I can see that she’s bloomed.

My mom is more kikay than the usual 60-year old mom, and now she has the perfect opportunity to get dressed up everyday. She went shopping over the weekend, and while her wardrobe has always been enviable, she now has a nice stock of teacher-y clothes. She popped in our room this morning while I was still sleeping to show me her pretty pink and white ensemble. What I’m not too happy about is that she took some of my make-up. Actually, she took what few MAC make-up I have (two lipsticks and an eyeshadow). I will just make sure to sweet-talk her into getting more make-up that we can share.

My dad got her a laptop last week, and most often you can find her working away (and sometimes Facebooking away) on it when she’s at home. I wish it had laptop insurance since my mom commutes most of the time. Anyway, she loves her new toy, my dad says it’s super fast, but she admits that she hasn’t been reading my blog lately because she’s been busy. I’ll just make sure to bookmark my site on her browser, I can’t lose my blog’s #1 fan. :D

I’m envious of her students who will get to see my mother more than I do, but I’m really happy and proud, I know she’ll do well.

Free Krispy Kreme doughnuts!

I rarely join blog contests that require me to do more than post a comment because I never win (or maybe that’s because I don’t join?), but I didn’t hesitate to join when Aileen Apolo offered a dozen free Kripy Kremes as the prize for her Mother’s Day contest. Besides, the mechanics were pretty simple: submit a photo of you with your mother to Chloe, the official Krispy Kreme girl on Facebook, with a description on why it’s magical. My mom and I have tons of pictures together, so this was easy! Here’s my entry:

Hong Kong Disneyland Space Mountain

This photo was taken two years ago at Space Mountain at the most magical place on earth, Disneyland, when I took my mother to Hong Kong.
At that very moment, for a little while, she was not a wife and mother managing a household with five kids while studying for her doctorate degree, she was a little girl without a care in the world just enjoying a roller coaster ride.

I won, yipee!

I love doughnuts, they’re on my list of top ten favorite foods, but they just taste a whole lot more delicious when they’re free!

Free Krispy Kreme Donuts

Thank you, Aileen and Chloe (and mama)! You’re wrecking my diet and I’ll have to spend extra minutes on the exercise bike, but Krispy Kreme doughnuts make me happy like nothing else can!

First Day of School

While other mothers retire once the kids are all grown up, mine gets her doctorate degree and starts working again.

Mama will be teaching college, and today is her first day. I feel proud and anxious, as if I’m a mother whose kid is off to his or her first day of nursery school. Except that she’s my mother, and she’s the teacher. :D

She worked hard for this, and I know she’s so excited right now. I’m excited for her, too. She’ll be great.

Good luck, Ma! We’re so proud of you!

She worked so hard on that dissertation of hers, she barely slept during the homestretch a few months back. And we were eating mostly take-out food then because she wasn’t cooking, so I’m glad that’s over now. :P I love my momma’s cooking too much.

Her dissertation topic: Risk Management Model for the Management of Daily Cash Balances in the Branches of a Financial Services Company: A Heuristic Approach with Stochastic Assumptions.

Yeah, whatever, Mom. Congratulations! I love you!

Today is Joe’s 18th birthday.

Today is the 12th anniversary of my dad’s quadruple bypass surgery.

Today, my mom had her defense for her dissertation for her Doctor of Business Administration degree. She’s now Dr. Mama! :D

I just love February 11!

Happy birthday to my dear brother, and congratulations to my dear mommy!

I can’t believe that Joe is now 18. We’re ten years apart, which makes me… ancient.
