The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades

*post title is a song by Timbuk3

New ones, that is. I want new shades.

I own just one pair of shades, a pair of Gucci shades that I bought 5 years ago with windfall money. I’m not really into expensive designer stuff (nor can I afford it), but I figured that a nice pair of shades would make a great investment piece. Plus, at that time, I deserved a splurge. I planned on wearing them everywhere for a long, long time. I did wear them everywhere, my shades went with me on all my trips:

Hong Kong Disneyland

Boracay

Singapore Zoo

Pearl Farm

Cambodia

Bangkok

These sunglasses are probably the most photographed item I own.

I think I’ve worn them long enough. It’s time to save up for another pair. After my Gucci shades, I now believe in splurging on designer sunglasses. I can’t afford to buy expensive name-brand eyewear anytime soon, but I’m already starting to scout for my next purchase.

I’m fortunate enough to be blessed with an oval face shape, I can get away with pretty much any shape of sunglasses. I have varied options. I’m thinking of getting a classic pair of Ray-Ban aviators or wayfarers, both of which are on my list of things I hope to own in this lifetime. I’m also considering getting Jackie O.-type ‘bubuyog’ shades, which will probably still be stylish when I have grandchildren. I think I also want Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses to match my Just Cavalli eyeglasses (seen here). I also want to get Kate Spade shades, just because I love Kate Spade, and they’re not as high end as, say, Gucci or Prada.

My clothing are all inexpensive–ukay-ukay and SM Department Store inexpensive–I feel I’m entitled to splurge on quality pieces every now and then. I hope I’ll be able to save enough money for a new pair within the year. Hopefully, I can buy one before our next trip, my current pair of sunglasses has definitely been photographed enough.

Unfussy

Abet and I are extremely unfussy about our wedding attires. We didn’t want to spend a lot on wedding outfits that will only be worn once, we wanted to have as much to spend on our caterer instead.

My gown is a very simple one. I can’t even call it a gown, it’s just a dress, a very basic one. So cheap, too. I ordered the fabric online since it’s not available here (5 yards at $10/yard) and had it shipped via Johnny Air for around P700 (it came in an envelope). My friend Marjo who teaches at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines is making my dress, and he’s charging me an obscenely low price, it’s just practically to pay his mananahi and buy the rest of the materials.

We got Abet’s barong in Tutuban in Divisoria for a low price. My brothers’ barongs (and probably those of our guests) cost more than his. Abet wasn’t also very fussy about the design, we were in and out of the store in less than ten minutes.

What I splurged on were my shoes. I bought a pair of Kate Spade sandals. They’re no Louboutins, but they cost more than what I usually spend on kicks. It’s my wedding gift to myself. I didn’t mind spending a bit on the shoes since I can wear them again and again.

I wanted Abet to get new shoes for himself as well, I wanted him to wear lace-ups. They don’t have to cost as much as Lowa Renegade Mid shoes, I just wanted him to get a new pair for the wedding. He absolutely refuses, saying he has a perfectly fine (non-lace-up, grrr!) pair to wear. Oh, well. If he insists.

I do worry a bit that maybe I’ll look kawawa at my own wedding. I’m not too worried about Abet, since really, who pays attention to the groom’s barong? (I’ll answer this: my brother Momon.) I just tell myself that simple as my dress is, I’m in love with the design, I fell in love at first sight with the peg, and it’s just my style. And that I’m proud of us for being practical on this matter. Also, I know I’ll be beautiful on my wedding day no matter what (yez, attitude!). Lastly, I tell myself that while my dress is chipipay, I’ll be wearing Kate Spade shoes. :-)

Bag Lust

I’m currently lusting over this newly-released Coach bag designed by one of my favorite fashion bloggers, Emily of Cupckases and Cashmere. I’m not into the Coach logo (they’re everywhere, and Coach isn’t even available here), so this is great. It’s roomy but compact–the size is perfect–and the pretty pale blush color is just to die for. Haaaay. This is love.
Alas, at $498, this pretty pink confection will just be in my wishlist and not on my arm. *big sigh*
