Christmas 2011

So, my loves, what did you do over the holidays?

As for me, the last few days were just filled with love and joy. This Christmas is extra special for Abet and me because it’s our first Christmas as a married couple, which means we have three families to spend the holidays with: his family, my family, and our own little family of two.

Last December 23, my family visited Abet and me the first time. I was so happy to have them all there, to have them see our home and meet our dogs (Phoebe comes with us whenever we spend weekends at my parents’).

Ooops, my dad is watafez in this photo. Sorry Papi, it’s the only one I have.We missed my brother Momon, who’s spending the holidays in the US with his in-laws. The curtains don’t match our home, I know. Those are my mother-in-law’s, we haven’t bought our own yet.

Moving on, Christmas Eve was spent at my in-laws’ house (which is just a minute away from our home, and that’s by foot). My brother-in-law Obet made us all wear red so he can take family portraits.

The only red piece of clothing I owned was a pambahay shirt, that had to do.

Christmas Day was at my parents’ house. This year’s celebration was very austere compared to what we’re used to, partly because Momon isn’t here to celebrate with us, and partly because now is not the time for grand celebrations, not after what happened to our beloved Cagayan de Oro which we used to call home. My parents donated to Sendong, therefore, just a simple Christmas celebration this year.

We had pansit and roasted chicken for Christmas lunch, but those weren’t your ordinary chickens. My dad and my brothers bought three native chickens a couple of days before, and those were slaughtered, stuffed silly with lemongrass, and roasted for our holiday meal.

You should have seen our backyard sink, it was gruesome. Thank you Aringkingking, Nokma, and Macmashaw for sacrificing your lives in order for us to have a feast. Yes, they had names. Burp.

Anyway, since Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were spent with our families, Abet and I started our own tradition. We will have our Christmas celebration, just the two of us in our home, the day after Christmas. December 26 will be Mr. & Mrs. Mesa’s Christmas Celebration Day. December 26 is when we’ll have a nice homemade candlelit dinner and that’s when we’ll open the presents under our tree.

For dinner, we made pesto spaghetti (using store-bought pesto) and we made fried chicken for the first time. Abet bought white wine. For dessert, we had fresh fruits dipped in melted Toblerone. Abet brewed a pot of Starbucks Christmas Blend coffee (now only P87.50 at 30% off, good for 8 cups!!!) to enjoy while we opened our presents. It was such a fun, memorable evening, I’m so glad we started this little tradition, and I can’t wait for next year (the food should be much better then).

I ate so much in the last week and will continue to eat a lot until next week, I’ll need to go back to Bikram when 2012 comes in (but not until I get a new yoga mat since I can’t find my current one). I have a lot of exercise to do to make up for all the food I’m stuffing my face with. I’ll worry about that in a few days, but in the meantime, I’m enjoying the time–and the food–with the people I love the most.

I hope you all had good Christmases spent with family, everyone! Stay safe this New Year!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

It was a happy 4th anniversary

Abet and my #1 mutual passion is food, hands down. Naturally, all our anniversary celebrations involve good food. Let me walk you through how we spent the last October 16′s:

2006

Dinner was at Galileo Enoteca, a lovely Italian resto/wine bar in Mandaluyong (Italian is our favorite cuisine). I remember this, our very first anniversary. It was such a milestone that I got two bouquets of flowers that day: the first was delivered to my house before I woke up, and he handed me the second one when we met for dinner. I didn’t get flowers this year, hmp!

Anniversary # 2 at Spiral, Sofitel

We didn’t travel for our anniversary that year because we were saving up for an eight-day trip to Singapore two months after, so we splurged a bit for dinner. This was at Spiral, Sofitel.

2009

I don’t have a blog-worthy picture of the two of us because I had a bloody eye. We didn’t want to spend so much because it was just a week before our SEAsian backpacking trip, and we ended up at this awesome Mexican restaurant called Jalapeño Cantina Mexicana in Ortigas Home Depot. Our anniversary meal cost Abet less than P1,000.

2010

Oh, it was all about food this year! Here’s what we had:

I made these: hotdog, pineapple, cheese

lumpiang shanghai

shrimps

the best baked mac in the whole wide world

steamed lapu-lapu

And the pièce de résistance:

CNT lechon Cebu

A whole CNT lechon flown in from Cebu. Yum!!! We’re lechon snobs, my family refuses to order Manila lechon, hehe.

CNT lechon Cebu

lechon + my dad and brothers

My sister had her celebration dinner for passing the nursing boards that night because my brother Joe is home on academic break . Since Abet and I are so kuripot right now, we decided to skip the fancy dinner this year and just celebrate at home. We didn’t spend a cent, even if it meant spending our anniversary with my family (and 30 of my sister’s friends). Anyway, even if we went somewhere else, no food we order could be as good as that wicked lechon Cebu. We’ll just have our own special celebration next weekend, just the two of us.

Oh, and Abet and I love our booze, and since it was a night of celebration, I drank more than I should. By the end of the night, I was this red:

Oh yes, my cat just had to be in the picture!

For our next anniversary, we’re going to have one heck of a party, and there’ll be awesome food as well. We booked the best caterer we can afford. Yep, we’ll be married exactly five years after our first kiss. (I made him kiss me, by the way, but let’s save that for another blog post.)

Happy anniversary to us, love! That was fun!

Now, excuse me while I click here, I ate way too much this weekend.

My brother’s wedding

After being together for nine years, Momon and Rosana got married yesterday at Sanctuario de San Jose in Greenhills yesterday. I have never seen such a tear-filled wedding, with Momon crying the most! I will never forget the look on my brother’s face when the church doors opened and he saw his bride in her wedding dress for the first time. By the time Ros reached the altar, we were all crying: Ros’s parents, my mom, my sister, their dearest friends- -even my brother Mako.

Momon crying during his vows. My sister-in-law wore a pink wedding gown.

There were even more tears during the reception at Adarna. We cried at my dad’s beautiful speech, we cried even more at Ros’s parents speeches, and we totally lost it when Momon and Ros gave their speeches. I never realized my brother could be so iyakin, hehe. But oh, it was such a fun, fun occasion full of love and happiness. Their same-day edit/onsite video is so makulit, I’ll share it once I get a copy.

We don’t have copies of the official photos from the photographers yet, but here are some pics from my sister May’s phone:

I am so happy for Momon and Ros. I wish them both a wonderful married life, and pamangkins for me and granchildren for my parents. My mother already want a grandchild but she’s not getting one from me in the next few years, so I’m hoping Momon and Ros can take care of that. The newly-weds will be flying up north to Batanes tomorrow for their honeymoon, I pray to the fertility gods to do their thing.

Mako May Dea

After next weekend, it will just be the three of us, Mako (#3), May (#4) and me (#1). Joe (#5) is in Baguio and Momon (#2) will be moving out after the wedding. I’m starting to feel sad already. I’m seriously considering getting more pets. I’m sure Momon will still be visiting every now and then, but it will be different. Like how different things were when Joe entered the academy. Don’t ask about what it would be like when I move out after my wedding. I don’t want to go there yet.

I’ll make sure the three of us will have a blast and have awesome bonding moments. I just hope they can squeeze in some time for their Ate between all their med school stuff.

(Pic above taken last year when I was home sick with the flu and we had nothing better to do than to figure out how to get rid of blackheads.)

She worked so hard on that dissertation of hers, she barely slept during the homestretch a few months back. And we were eating mostly take-out food then because she wasn’t cooking, so I’m glad that’s over now. :P I love my momma’s cooking too much.

Her dissertation topic: Risk Management Model for the Management of Daily Cash Balances in the Branches of a Financial Services Company: A Heuristic Approach with Stochastic Assumptions.

Yeah, whatever, Mom. Congratulations! I love you!

I’m already looking forward to Joe’s next vacation.

My March

Well, looky here. I can’t believe it’s the already the second week of March. Actually, I can’t believe that it’s already March, didn’t we just celebrate the holidays?

I’m loving my March so far! At the home front, it’s been very happy and fun lately, we’re really blessed. We’re all excited about Joe’s vacation mid-month, and we’re glad that he’s now a yearling or a third class cadet–that’s a second year student for us civilians.

This month, I’ve also been doing good with my fitness goals. I have a rather ambitious goal for this Lenten season, and I’m well on my way to achieving that by Easter. I’ve been trying to eat well since Ash Wednesday, but I amped it up at the start of the month by going to the gym after work. I actually went four times last week, and this week I’ll aim to go everyday. I’m on a roll! During lunchtime, I now utilize a phrase I didn’t really use before: “Half-rice lang po, ‘te.“I am so getting my sexy back this year!

Has anyone seen Alice in Wonderland yet? I’m a big Tim Burton/Helena Bonham Carter/Johnny Depp fan, so this is something I’ve been looking forward to since last year. The reviews on my friends’ Facebook statuses are mixed, but Abet and I are still looking forward to watching it in 3D. We’ll wait for a couple of weeks for a) our paychecks, because we’re currently poor; and b) the opening weekend crowd to die down (but it’s mainly the former, haha!).

Speaking of movies, I’ve been “craving” for some movies lately, I’m making Abet download random movies I’d like to watch again: Land Before Time, Fern Gully, The Cutting Edge, Drop Dead Fred, etc. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older (aren’t we all?), but I want to watch movies from my childhood again.

And speaking of poor, Abet and I have been staying in a lot recently. Weekends are now spent watching movies and TV shows on his laptop instead of going out. We take turns choosing movies. So far he’s picked Somewhere in Time, I’ve chosen The Graduate and Children of Heaven, a beautiful Iranian film about a brother and sister and shoes. We also make the other watch our favorite TV shows: he’s now watching How I Met Your Mother and Glee, and last night I watched the pilot of Ed (ancient, I know, but it’s his favorite). We just make popcorn with their cool electric popcorn maker. I guess we’ll be having more of these tipid movie nights in the next 18 months 20 years.

You know what I’m most looking forward to this month? My boyfriend’s birthday! Abet will be turning 29 this year–pwede na nang mag-asawa! :D

Have a good month, y’all!

The long way home

Papa finally got home today after being stranded since Thursday, thank God! It was just supposed to be balikan trip, all he brought with him was leche flan and chocolate muffins for my brother. No thanks to the landslides that blocked Marcos Highway and Kennon Road, he got stuck in Baguio with no change of clothes and no cellphone charger. Still, my dad is a very hard-headed chum and wanted to come home already, especially since Mama just came back from a week in Surigao yesterday. This is the same guy who went up to Baguio in the midst of typhoon Pepeng, after all (while my paranoid office took us home early as a safety precaution–and dropped us off in front of our doorsteps).

And so, my dad is home, safe and warm, but not after three bus rides, one jeepney ride, one van ride, one tricycle ride (12 of them crammed in one tricycle!), and three long, muddy hikes…

the Victory Liner bus from Baguio took them only up to here

damaged road

hiking along the highway

lapuk

boulders along Kennon Road from the landslides

more walking along mud

finally, dry land

this bridge in Pangasinan was impassable…

because it collapsed

Seems like my dad had quite an adventure–and a 12-hour adventure, at that! He’s exhausted and is getting a massage as I type. I’m glad that he’s as tenacious as he is (he seemed to forget that he’s a heart patient, my God!), because if he weren’t, he’d still be in Baguio right now, and we’d still be deathly worried.

Anyway, it looks like he enjoyed the way home. Who says baby-boomer dads can’t camwhore?

8 Years in the Making–A Proposal Story

FINALLY, MOMON AND ROS ARE ENGAGED!!! Kudos to my brother Momon for pulling off a most creative proposal!

From Momon’s Facebook:

Finally proposed to Ros yesterday. We went back to UP since we had plenty, if not, the majority of memories there as a couple. I prepared a game for her, as a tribute and also to get back at her for giving me a quiz before we became official 8 years ago. Anyway, I tied ribbons in places where we had unique or special memories (like in AS parking lot, where we saw a dead body) and gave her clues where to find it. I gave her a puzzle piece for every ribbon found. Ros loves and has a collection of jigsaw puzzles so I made one out of our favorite picture.
